Went to see the sculptures from Louvre Museum. Was amazed that they were the actual sculptures and not some replicas. Had a bad experience with "fossils" at the Science Center. Although we could not take photographs, nonetheless a good experience.

The Loof's New Mixes

Had the Yum.sg event @ the Loof last weekend
Loof had a new mixologist to concoct the following creations:

"The Tom Yum"
A spicy, sour, sweet mix that was topped off by a refreshing dash of lime. A real pick-me-up after a long day's work!

"Poached Pear"

A great starter to a chill-out evening! Sweet with mellow pear, and for the playful, drink it out of a
stick of cinnamon!

The "Gummi Berri"
- A Yum.sg and personal favourite!

An explosion of berry flavors hidden beneath a thick coat of meringue. Great for those who had a light dinner! A strictly enforced rule is that this drink must NOT be drunk using a straw! Drink it such that the meringue gets messy all over the lips!

Steve the bartender blow torching the meringue.

The way Gummi Berri should be drunk! (Check out the sexy lips.)

A cucumber cooler mix! Great for warm, humid evenings! Also, light enough to start a whole round of other drinks!

World Gourmet Summit 2007!

Made it into the World Gourmet Summit at the eleventh hour!

First up!

Met up with Chef Sam Leong (he remembers me!) and said hi, and music wa
s really loud and we just smiled and shouted some stuff.. heh.. took a picture with him

Two Sam Leongs!

Lucious, smooth, rich...

The food at World Gourmet Summit was sensational. This pinkish glossy thing with rich chocolate inside makes your regular off-the-shelf chocolate truffles taste like frigging Maltasers.

Redefining Dining: Yum.Sg

Moving away from the typical restaurant guides that simply tell you "What's the cheapest" or "What's good" with inexperienced, tactless writers that might just bring a restaurant down unecessarily, comes Yum.Sg to the rescue!

A few of us have set up a guide, aimed to share and celebrate everyone's experiences of dining in Singapore! Getting to this point has been a long uphill climb filled with many delays and obstacles, but it has been worth every drop of sweat.

www.yum.sg

A Singaporean was once quoted in the news, 'Why should we pay for a 50 dollar meal, when I can have a plate of chicken rice for 2 dollars?'

The Yum.sg team wants to change the way people dine in Singapore. The aim of setting up this website is to get Singaporeans excited about eating at restaurants and actively take part in the creation of their own unique dining experiences.

So let's get this trend moving! Register as a user, help us improve on the functionality and remove errors from the website! If you write well, write a great comment for a restaurant that you've eaten at before and get a chance to be invited on board as our reviewer!

If you love taking photos, join us too! We could always use an extra shutterbug on standby!

The community is growing, you are all part of it! Celebrate Life's Experiences today!

Star Chef!

Ended up going to watch the filming of the finals of Channel U's Star Chef at Shatec in Bukit Batok. Met an old army friend there, Jerry, who happened to be studying in Shatec.

This was the final round of the Star Chef show, where the final three contestants have to come up with dishes to impress the judges. The panel of judges are made up of high profile chefs such as Chef Sam Leong of Tung Lok Group, and even the head chef of the new Cannery group.

Each contestant prepares their meals in the kitchen of the Shatec school and presents to the judges where their skill in culinary arts will be thoroughly scrutinized. It's like standing in front of the firing squad. Some of the comments can be quite harsh.

A friend of mine, Janice, who was one of the top three. The judge there is the head chef of The Cannery group. Very flamboyant character, and sports a pair of shades on top of his head. Janice prepared dessert, something which she has a flair for. Get your tiramisus made by this next-big-thing!

www.tiramisudivine.com order now!

At the end of the show, the grand prize of $10,000 will go to somebody.. of course i don't think i should mention the winner until the show airs on tv.

And here we have Chef Sam Leong firing away at one of the contestants. He's reputated to be a very difficult mentor. He has successfully showed that side of him in the previous episodes of Star Chef. However, he's the type of guy to be much harsher on the ones he expects to perform. The criticism and feedback he provides hits the nail on the head everytime. And in a sense, to get a scolding is probably a good thing as he wants them to learn.

I had the honour of speaking to him for a short while after the event, and realised that he's a very down-to-earth guy. No airs, no flamboyance, just a very honest, good natured guy who has dedicated his life to being a chef, and to helping others becoming a chef.

His advice for those who think that they want to be a chef?

Don't.

really tired out

wow.. it's like 4.22am and i can't sleep.. i get up so exhausted, feeling unrested.

this whole yum.sg thing is tiring me out.. i really hope it bloody works. but at least I know I've still got that old magic in me. trying to hire, manage, coordinate, encourage and relate to temps is an easy task if it was only just a 4-6 hour event. but this is nation-wide. and the budget is tight. i wake up in the middle of the night after having a nightmare that my temps all left me, one after the other, and I'm left to go do it myself, or the entire project fails.

Fortunately, I'm not having that nightmare tonight. I think my body aches too much and i just keep waking up. I need new pillows. I also need a fatter wallet. My wallet's on a hunger strike now.

then there are other things like photography and online responsibilities. i haven't even had the time to go think about it.

And at work at my attachment work place, I wish I can leave earlier, but truthfully, even I don't feel like leaving. There's just so many things that needs to be done, and I can't trust leaving it to others to do it. Yet.

I realised I babble a lot when it's very late at night. I haven't been talking for quite a while in my previous posts.

don't get me wrong. I'm having a good time. i love juggling work and getting things done. if i hadn't done this, I'd grow fat and die. but with all these happening, I'd grow fat and die happy.

Here's a random picture that I wanted to put a while ago... I love nature. I'm a tree hugging hippie.. minus the weed. and the long hair. and the large glasses...

oh wait, i do have the large glasses.

The road not taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
two roads diverged in a wood, and I --
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Sleepless in Singapore

Sleepless. That's what tonight's all about. Maybe the weather, maybe the stress from work. I don't know.

This collection of photos was taken years back on one of my bike trips to Jurong Hill.

The camera I used then had 12x optical zoom. So it was pretty cool to capture the moon.

The yellow eerie loneliness seems to spill out from the moon.

The street lamps line up like a sparking gold chain. When I was younger, I always imagined that it was gold that made the street lamps glow yellow. The empty streets are damp from the evening shower. The cold hard tar reflects the warm light. The emptiness echoes for miles and miles.

My dad used to be in the shipping industry. The industrial area is like my backyard (even literally so). I love the lights. The lights that last forever through the night, only to be snuffed out by the rising sun. I once dreamt that they were little gems and jewels when I was younger. My dream was filled with lights and colours racing about the horizon, dancing off the water like they are doing so here.

More than 10 years ago, a book was launched on Changi Airport Terminal 2 when it just opened. I stared at the pictures of the road outside the new terminal endlessly. I always wondered how the traffic trails were created in photos. Now I know.

Ah, but knowing is only a fraction of the story. Perfecting a night shot is difficult, because burning and out of focus happen very often.(For example, on the right). These photos are taken from the top of Jurong Hill. Jurong Hill is just located behind the Jurong Bird Park, a steep, lesser known hill. The view is amazing from there. One can see Jurong Island and even the UOB building all way across the other side. Jurong Hill has many trees planted by royalty, like Queen Elizabeth, to commemorate the monumental reclamation of the entire Jurong area from swamplands.

Can anyone guess how I created this shot? No, it's not forced out-of-focus. :)

The road to Jurong Island. The lights sparkle in the vast emptiness of the sky. Only the lights, the infinite sky and I exist together here.

Little Red Dot in the sky

Look up into the sky tonight. You'll probably see two bright objects in the sky.

You'll probably notice a little red sparkly dot in the sky. That's Mars. It's on its course to be 69 million kilometres away from Earth in October 30 2006. That's the second closest distance that it has ever been to Mother Earth. The closest was in 2003, August 27, and that was 56 million kilometres.

And no, don't believe what that email hoax has been spreading. Mars will not be as big as the moon. If it ever would, we won't be alive to see it. Not because it won't happen in our lifetime, but because the presence of Mars at such a close distance, will create tides that wash in and out with the power of tsunamis on a regular basis, drowning the entire face of the earth with water, leaving only the Nepalese high and dry. (lucky you, regina.)

Having spotted our dusty neighbour, stretch your hands out into the sky. Approximately two palm lengths away from Mars, is another bright heavely object. A bright, white, unsparkly object. That, is the Genesis-1 Satellite. We're not lucky enough to spot the International Space Station as of yet. The last time it passed over Singapore skies was 19/08/2006, but at 1pm in the afternoon. As if right out from the fantasy stories of Star Wars and Star Trek, the International Space Station is, well, an international space collaboration. This picture was taken by the crew of Discovery as the shuttle left the ISS.

Nostalgia

2 Fast 2 Furious

Ready Set Go!

Another one bites the dust.

"Oh wait, I do have two left feet."

It was a good day!

Introducing our inland wakeboarding circuit!

It's essentially the same thing, getting pulled. But there's just no speedboat wake generated.

"Look ma! No h-, oh shoot."

I apologise for all the blurred pictures. Do you realise how difficult it is to take moving objects? That's why pictures of footballers, wrestlers and F1 racecars fetch top dollars! Not to mention celebrities' babies, but that's another story.
Anyhow, I hope to one day own a decent digital SLR, and train that eye of mine. I want to take emotional, moving photos. I want to take photos that are so simple, and yet evoke the deepest emotions of people.
